Barbara D. Mertz, 65, of Ephrata, passed away on December 20th, 2025, at Lancaster General Hospital. Born on September 29, 1960, in Ephrata, Barbara was the daughter of the late Robert & Elizabeth (Shreiner) Hess, and the loving wife of Luke H. Mertz until his passing in 2017. A beloved mother and grandmother, Barbara left a lasting impact on everyone who knew her through her dedication to family and her professional career.
A proud graduate of Shippensburg College in 1982, Barbara dedicated most of her professional life to the D&E Telephone Company. She also contributed her skills at Sensenig Roofing and Modern Cleaners before retiring in 2024. Her career was marked by her commitment and hard work, which inspired those around her. Barbara was a vibrant member of her community as a devoted member of Akron Community Church, she found strength and solace in her faith. Barbara was also an active member of the Ephrata Rec Center, where her passion for fitness was evident in everything she did. Throughout her life, Barbara cherished the moments spent with her family, particularly her grandchildren. She had a special bond with them and took immense joy in their company. Barbara will be remembered for her kindness, her spirited personality, and her unwavering devotion to her family and community. She leaves behind a legacy of love and resilience that will continue to inspire all who knew her.
Barbara is survived by four children—Jason S. Mertz (Melissa) of Lititz, PA, Angela D. Susten of Ephrata, PA, Caitlyn M. Ackley (Joshua) of Ephrata, PA, and Adam J. Mertz of Ephrata, PA; five grandchildren—Ryder, Hailey, Isabelle, Dawson, and Bryson; and two siblings - Brian of Raleigh, North Carolina and Patti of Greenville, South Carolina..
A viewing will be held on Saturday, December 27th, from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM with a funeral service following at 11:00 AM at Gravenor Sipler Funeral Home and Cremation, located at 100 W. Main Street, Ephrata, PA. Barbara’s final resting place will be next to her husband at Memory Gardens.
