Obituary

Doris E. Minnich, passed away peacefully on January 12, 2026, at her home in Ephrata. Born on March 9, 1942, in Ephrata, Doris was a daughter of the late Clarence W. & Elizabeth (Witwer) Ulrich. She was also the loving wife of 63 years to James B. Minnich. Doris was born in Ephrata, raised in Ephrata, went to school in Ephrata, married in Ephrata, raised a family in Ephrata, and operated a business in Ephrata.

A graduate of Ephrata High School, class of 1960, Doris furthered her education by earning an Associate's Degree in business from Goldey-Beacom College in Wilmington, Delaware. Her professional career began as a secretary at Armstrong Industries in Lancaster, where she honed her organizational skills and commitment to excellence. After 8 years there, Doris became a stay at home mom until the family moved from Lititz and took over the management of the Dutchmaid Motel in Ephrata, in late 1975. She ultimately became a proprietor of the Dutchmaid Motel, Lounge (and later The Deck). Later on, wanting to be more involved in the community, in 1987 she also became an integral part of the Ephrata Hospital team, serving as a mail clerk and switchboard operator for roughly 20 years.

Whether working shifts at the hospital, the Motel or The Deck, she forged many great relationships, as was always the case whatever she did and wherever she went. She was a natural in showcasing her spirit, determination and great sense of humor, whether serving the community meals when working the Deck kitchen or whatever she was doing. She had such an impact on several generations that she was fondly known as “Mom” and/or “Mom Minnich” to so many in the surrounding community.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Doris certainly cherished her time spent with family and friends. Doris had a deep love for her dogs and enjoyed spending time out back at the pool with friends and family. In recent years she looked forward to spending time at the beach with her children, particularly in Ocean City, Maryland. That became an annual multi-vacation tradition each summer. She was a vibrant member of a close-knit group of women who had played cards together since the 1960s, fondly known as the "Card Club." Even though they seldom played cards in their later years, opting instead for going out to eat at a different place each month, this special group of women eventually became known as “The Best Buds.” Doris was also an avid fan of NCAA Wrestling, making an annual trip to the national tournament over the past 15 years, proudly supporting Penn State. She went with her sons Jan and Troy to 11 of the last 15 NCAA D1 events in 10 different cities and cherished that as one of her favorite weekend getaways of the year. There was next level fun had by mom, as Penn State Wrestling has been and continues to enjoy a dynasty over that span, the likes of which, no other collegiate sports team has ever seen.

Doris leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and countless cherished memories. Her fun-loving spirit will continue to inspire her family and friends, who will carry her memory in their hearts forever.

Doris is survived by her husband, James B. Minnich; three children: Jan S. Minnich (Kathleen), Troy J. Minnich (Maureen), and Kimberly A. Minnich (John Weaver); seven grandchildren: Tan'a (Keith) Highfield, Dakota R. Minnich, Keagan (Brittany) Remp, Jackson (Kayla) Hart,, Tristan Hart, Aniston Weaver, Easton Weaver, two great-grandchildren; Joi Highfield and Iyana Highfield. Doris was preceded in death by her brother, William "Bill" Ulrich.

A viewing and visitation time will be held on Saturday, January 24th from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. with a celebration of life service at 12:00 p.m., held at LCBC Ephrata; 6 Hahnstown Rd, Ephrata, PA 17522.
