Emma L. Shirk, 77, passed away peacefully on September 3, 2025, at Ephrata Manor. She was born on October 25, 1947, in Reading to the late Robert and Amanda (Wilk) Behney and was the loving wife of Allen B. Shirk for 48 years until his passing in 2014.
Emma was a graduate of Cocalico High School, Class of 1965. Emma devoted her life to helping others, working as a social worker with The Salvation Army and later in elder care, where she made a profound impact on the lives of the homeless, the elderly, and those less fortunate.
Her career was a true reflection of her deep compassion and unwavering commitment to her faith. Beyond her professional work, Emma’s volunteer efforts touched many lives. Whether lending a hand to individuals in crisis or offering a comforting word to a neighbor, she was always ready to help others in need.
Emma’s passions extended beyond her career. A lover of reading and crafting, she nurtured her creative spirit through a variety of artistic endeavors, constantly exploring new mediums and finding joy in life’s simple pleasures. Her talent for transforming everyday materials into something beautiful was just one of the many ways she showed her creativity and kindness.
Emma will be remembered for her boundless warmth, her selflessness, and her commitment to improving the lives of those around her. She leaves behind a legacy of love, compassion, and inspiration. Those who know her will carry her spirit forward, remembering the profound impact she made in their lives.
Emma is survived by her daughter, Valerie (Dennis) Schmeck; two sons, Gregory L. Shirk and Jeffery W. (April) Shirk; two grandchildren, Taylor A. Schmeck and Samantha J. (Jacob Boyer) Shirk; and a great-grandchild, Anders Boyer. She is also survived by her brother, Robert (Linda Kay) Behney, and her sister, Katie R. Garhing.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Emma's life. Visitation will be held on Saturday, September 27, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, followed by a Celebration of Life service at 2:00 PM at Good Sipler Funeral
