Gary Lee Horner

Gary Lee Horner, 84, passed away on September 23, 2025, at Penn State Health St. Joseph Medical Center. Born on August 12, 1941, in Bedford, Pennsylvania, he was a son of the late Calvin S. & Martha J. (Shull) Horner, and the loving husband of Geraldine A. (Boccagno) Horner for over 30 years until her passing in 2022.

A proud graduate of Bedford High School, class of 1960, Gary was known for his quippy demeanor and a strong sense of humor. His sporting days included playing high school basketball, a passion that framed his love for sports throughout his life. From 1962 to 1967, Gary served his country in the Navy, where he played an active role during the Cuban Missile Crisis and worked in the air conditioning division. His military service enriched his life and instilled in him a deep sense of patriotism, which he expressed through his involvement with the Patriotic Sons of America. Gary was a dedicated community member and an integral part of St. Matthew's United Methodist church, where he volunteered in the church kitchen, earning the affectionate title of "official potato peeler". He later became a member and volunteer for Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church in Ephrata. He was a fervent supporter of the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Pirates, proudly displaying his team colors on game days. He also found joy in golfing, participating in league play at Twin Ponds in Gilbertsville, as well as bowling leagues in Boyertown. His zest for life was evident in his enjoyment of bingo, where he frequented Sokol Hole in Reading, and in his role as a Little League coach, nurturing the next generation of athletes. In every aspect, whether through his hobbies or community service, Gary was a go-getter, never one to stay still for long. He enjoyed life’s simple pleasures, such as sharing a good steak dinner at Texas Roadhouse and watching western movies. His love for gardening blossomed into a beautiful collection of flowers that he cherished. Through his achievements and dedication, Gary made a lasting impact on those around him, and he will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him.

Gary is survived by his two children, Kelly (Kevin) Freed and Scott (Joie) Horner, and stepdaughter Kathy (Paul) Freese; five grandchildren, Kristin, Amy, Jessica, Anna, and Jayden; seven great-grandchildren, Macie, Carson, Cameron, Layla, Mya, Naomi, and Madelyn; brother Raymond (Cheryl) Horner; step-sister, Diane Gialamas (Jim); and previous wife, Sandra Kring (Keith) Leonard. Gary was preceded in death by his great-grandchild, River Paul.

A memorial service to honor Gary will be held on September 30, 2025, starting at 9:00 AM, followed by visitation with family at 10:00 AM at Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church; 1331 West Main Street Ephrata, PA 17522. A graveside service will take place at Laureldale Cemetery at 12:15 PM; 501 S 18th St, Reading, PA 19606.
