Lowell D. Haws, 87, of Reinholds, passed away on February 2, 2026, at Tower Health Reading Hospital. He was born on January 18, 1939, in Reinholds, Pennsylvania, to the late John G. and Clara (Sloat) Haws, and the loving husband of 65 years to Sandra E. (Bixler) Haws, who he spent many years cultivating a deep connection to their community together.
His academic journey began at what was formerly known as Cocalico Union High School, where he served as class president for the class of ‘56, displaying leadership qualities that would carry throughout his life. A proud graduate of Franklin & Marshall College with a degree in Chemistry, Lowell furthered his education with a master’s degree in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Cincinnati. Lowell made significant contributions in his professional career as a chemist working at Mound Laboratories from 1960 to 1995, where he dedicated approximately 35 years of service before retiring. His expertise and intelligence were admired by colleagues and friends alike. Known for his loving nature and active engagement with family and the community, he was a stalwart member of Swamp Lutheran Church in Reinholds, where he found a sense of belonging and purpose. Lowell was also an enthusiastic member of the Lions Club, serving in Denver, Reinholds, and also as lieutenant governor for the Lions Club in Ohio. He also participated in the Cocalico Valley Historical Society as its president. As a member of the American Chemical Society, he remained passionate about his field of work until the end of his life. Lowell’s greatest joys came from traveling, with Great Britain being one of his favorite destinations. He relished exploring the world and creating unforgettable memories with family and friends. His zest for life and adventurous spirit were evident to all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Lowell leaves behind a legacy of love, dedication, and strong community ties that will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Lowell is survived by his beloved wife, Sandra E. (Bixler) Haws; his children, Krista (Tim) Mize and John Haws; his grandson, Evan Mize; his niece, Kathy (Fred) Hainley and numerous other nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, John G. and Clara (Sloat) Haws, and his brother, Jay E. Haws.
A viewing scheduled will take place on Monday, February 9, 2026, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Good Sipler Funeral & Cremation Centre, Inc. at 34-38 N. Reamstown Road, Reamstown (Stevens), PA. A further viewing will take place on Tuesday, February 10th from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. with the funeral service to begin at 11:00 a.m. at Swamp Lutheran Church; 275 Swamp Church Rd, Reinholds, PA 17569. Lowell’s final resting place will be at Memory Gardens in Ephrata.
