Marcia L. Martin, 82, passed away peacefully on June 5, 2026, at Garden Spot Village. Born on March 31, 1944, in Philadelphia, Marcia was a daughter of the late Mark and Florence (Steward) Hammel, and the loving wife of David Martin until his passing in 2025.
Marcia's journey began in Philadelphia, where she attended and graduated from Philadelphia High School for Girls. She pursued higher education, graduating from Millersville University in 1966 with an undergraduate degree in Education and several years later a master's degree. Her professional career was marked by an unwavering commitment to nurturing young minds. Marcia served as a revered teacher in Eastern Lancaster County School District for over 30 years, retiring from Summit Valley, now known as New Holland Elementary. She received the Elementary Social Studies teacher of the year award in 1987. She encouraged students to participate in the National History Day Competition with many earning state and national awards. She shared her passion for the dramatic arts by fostering children’s theater at Garden Spot Performing Arts at Garden Spot HS She directed the children’s theater production each season for many years.
Marcia co- founded Ephrata Act, a local nonprofit, live theater organization, supported by the Brossman Foundation and located in the Old Main Theatre for almost 15 years. She directed traditional productions, as well as wrote numerous original scripts, including The Ephrata Story. She also brought melodramas and other vibrant productions to venues such as Mountain Springs Hotel, The Mill, and the VFW.
Marcia and David played a significant role in restoring and maintaining Foxfire House, a living history project of the Penn Laurel Council of the Girl Scouts of America. She and David also volunteered at Shenandoah National Park during the summer of 1992 and earned an Excellence in Service award from the National Park Service.
She survived breast cancer and emerged stronger and more vibrant. She taught theater and English classes at Reading Area Community College (RACC) in Reading,
Her remarkable embodiment of Mary Beatty in first-person interpretations brought history to life for many, particularly through her engagements in Gettysburg and around the state during the Civil War centennial anniversary. Her love of community and music was evident through her many hours of volunteer service at the Ephrata Cloister, where she gave tours of the site and acted and sang in the Vorspiel, sharing her voice and spirit generously. Her role as an active member and cantor of Our Mother of Perpetual Help Church for over 40 years, further reflected her deep commitment to faith and fellowship. Marcia’s legacy as an educator, artist, survivor, and pillar of her community continues to inspire all who knew her.
Marcia is preceded in death by siblings Deborah Anderson and Diane Mellott and is survived by two daughters, Wendy (Jeffrey) Bryden of Moose Pass, Alaska & Jane (John) Baker of Lancaster; three grandchildren, Cody, Casey, & Alexis.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, July 11, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Our Mother of Perpetual Help Church, located at 320 Church Avenue in Ephrata, Pennsylvania. The visitation will be followed by a Mass at 11:00 a.m. at the same location.
