Nina S. Mayhew, 94, of Lititz, passed away on December 13, 2025, at the WellSpan Community Hospital of Ephrata. She was born on June 18, 1931, in Chicago, Illinois, to the late Claus and Nettie (Holten) Soderlind, and was married in 1962 to the late H. Floyd Mayhew.
Nina's educational journey began at Bowen High School, from which she graduated in the class of 1949. She continued her education at Wittenburg University in Springfield, Ohio, where she studied dietary and nutrition sciences. After completing her studies, she interned at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis before transitioning to a full-time role as a devoted mother and homemaker in 1962 and moving to Connecticut in 1963. In 1974, Nina relocated with her family to Lancaster County, where she embarked on various professional paths throughout the 1980s, engaging in retail sales and secretarial work at multiple banks. She dedicated her talents and energies to her career until her retirement in 1997.
Nina was deeply involved in her community. A long-standing member of Faith United Evangelical Lutheran Church, she previously held membership at Salem Lutheran Church in Reamstown, where she made significant contributions, including heading social ministry committee that promoted fellowship in the congregation and leading a sewing group that sought to aid those in need. Her passion extended to sewing and fabric arts—she crafted many of her clothes and enjoyed needlepoint. A lover of literature, she found joy in reading contemporary fiction novels about the World War II era. Nina's warm spirit and generous heart will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Nina is survived by her loving family, including her daughter Deborah Comstock (Starr) of Hebron, KY; her sons Scott Mayhew of Pittsburgh and Paul Mayhew of Washington, DC; three grandchildren, Lara Mayhew, Benjamin Smith, and Joshua Hill; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her stepdaughter, Jarilyn Ponte, and three sisters: Helen Soderlind, Melba Geibel, and Irene Amundsen.
Friends and family are invited to celebrate Nina's life at Faith United Evangelical Lutheran Church; 357 Walnut St, Denver, PA 17517 on Thursday, December 18th. Visitation will be held from 12:30 p.m. to 1:00 p.m., followed by a Celebration of Life at 1:00 p.m.
