Obituary

Rita M. Shirker, 94, peacefully passed away on June 4, 2026, at Maple Farm Nursing Home in Akron. Born in York, on December 16, 1931, Rita was a daughter of the late, George V. and Catherine (Grove) Deller, and the loving wife of Horace H. Shirker Jr. until his passing in 1999.

A graduate of York Catholic High School's class of 1949, Rita went on to serve as a secretary for Our Mother of Perpetual Help (OMPH) School. She left an enduring legacy by initiating the lunch program that benefited countless students. She was also a dedicated CCD teacher for OMPH Church, nurturing the religious education of many children over the years. Rita was actively involved with the PTO and the Athletic Association at OMPH School, and served as a eucharistic minister, faithfully contributing to the spiritual life of her parish. Rita was a longtime parishioner of Our Mother of Perpetual Help Catholic Church where she shared her devotion and joy by her membership in the church choir and Legion of Mary and attending daily Mass. Rita’s commitment to service extended well into her volunteer efforts as a hospice aide, where she offered comfort and compassion during difficult times. Those who knew Rita appreciated her gentle nature, her love for reading, and her fondness for beach outings. She treasured spending quality time with her family. Rita also enjoyed the simple pleasures of playing cards and caring deeply for children, always offering a nurturing presence. Rita’s life was a testament to faith, family, and community. Her memory will remain a blessing to all who knew her.

Rita is survived by her loving children: Terry (Nancy) Dickersheid, Bonnie (Ron) Weinhold, Angela (Warren) Martzall, Mark (Wendy) Deller, Jody Rampolla, Elizabeth (Troy) Eberly, Mary Alice (Tim) Faust, Amy (Brian) Huseman, Melissa (Marc) Brinser, Matthew (Kimberly) Shirker, and Andrew (Allison) Shirker. She also leaves behind nineteen cherished grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren, as well as her sister, Monica Bowman.
