Alta M. Hoshour, 90, was called home to glory on Monday, January 26th, at Wellspan Ephrata Community Hospital, after a brief illness. Born in Lauschtown, she was the daughter of the late Clarence J. & Bertha G. (Kessler) Weinhold and the wife of Earl Hoshour, Sr. until his passing in 2000. She was a fixture in the Bowmansville community, where she resided until her transition to long-term care at Manor Care in Lancaster and finally to Ephrata Manor. Alta was an active church member at St. Paul's UCC in Bowmansville and spent over 50 years volunteering for the local cub scout pack. Over the years, she worked as an Avon lady, contributor to the Ephrata Review, as well as spending 26 years as a bus driver and 8 years as a bus aide for ELANCO school district. She enjoyed crafts, collecting small owl and school bus figurines, and being out in her community. Everyone will miss hearing her thick Pennsylvania Dutch accent and tasting her homemade meadow tea and macaroni salad. The family would like to thank the staff of Ephrata Manor for their care over the last few years.
Alta is survived by 4 children and four daughters-in-law: Shirley Bostic (the late Ira) of Lancaster, Earl Hoshour Jr. (Shirley) of Ephrata, Robert Hoshour (Jenise) of NYC and Cascais, Portugal, Jane Hoshour (the late Barry) of Bowmansville, & Kevin Hoshour (Jacqueline) of Ephrata; 6 grandchildren, many great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Four sisters: Hazel Sweigart, Shirley, wife of Ernest Dunkelberger, Sr., Agnes, wife of Steve Thomas, & Helen, wife of Harold Shaak. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a son, Barry, great grandson, Zachary Wieland, sisters, Bertha Adair, Mary Jane "Janie" Buchter, wife of David Buchter; and three brothers, Clarence 'Shorty' Weinhold Jr., husband of Marion Weinhold, Evan Weinhold, and David Weinhold. Alta also lost 5 young siblings (Charles, Barbara, Elsie, Lydia, and a stillborn baby).
A viewing will be held on Wednesday, February 4th from 6 to 8 p.m. at Good Sipler Funeral & Cremation Centre, 34 N. Reamstown Rd., Reamstown (Stevens), PA 17567. There will be a viewing at 10 a.m. followed by the funeral service at 11 a.m. on Thursday, February 5th at St. Paul's UCC; 133 Church St, Bowmansville, PA 17507 with interment to follow at Bowmansville Union Cemetery.
In memory of Alta, contributions are appreciated to St. Paul's UCC (P.O. Box 177 Bowmansville, PA 17507) or The Ephrata Manor Benevolent Fund (99 Bethany Rd, Ephrata, PA 17522).
